Rainy afternoon in Cambridge

A wet, miserable day in Cambridge   ☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔☔

Time to raid the kitchen cupboards for fun things to explore.

Flour, Olive Oil, Salt, food colour and water, what have you got...PLAYDOUGH

                                 Let the fun begin

Playdough is tactile, fun and great for all multi-sensory early development.  Playing with your child encourages social interaction and language.  It can be very calming for both children and adults too.
You can buy Playdough or make your own, it only takes about five minutes.

                                   How to make Playdough
Ingredients:

About 200g plain flour
1tbs oil
About 100g salt
A few drops of food colouring
2tsps cream of tartre

  • Put the flour, salt, cream of tarter and oil into a large saucepan.
  • Add the food colouring to the water.
  • Add the liquid gradually to the ingredients in the saucepan and mix in thoroughly to get rid of lumps.
  • Put the pan over a medium-low heat and cook, stirring constantly.
  • Continue to stir until the dough becomes very stiff.
  • Remove from the pan, allow to cool down.
  • Knead it thoroughly until it becomes smooth and pliable and holds its shape well.
Cooked homemade playdough should be stored in an air tight container and can be used several times before discarding.

If you want playdough, without cooking, try mixing flour and water before adding a small amount of poster paint!  It's great fun to do this with an older child and it really doesn't matter about the end result as the fun is in the doing and getting covered in flour and paint 😉  You may even end up with something that looks like playdough!

Never leave a small child to play by himself with playdough as it can be a choking hazard. When playing young children need constant supervision.

Keep safe and have fun 💙🌝
